WHY LAOS?
Travellers looking for something new—or rather, are looking for Southeast Asia as it was 50 years ago—should add Laos to their vacation list.
Unlike other Southeast Asian countries that have embarked on high-energy growth plans, Laos has remained low-key and developed at its own pace in relative isolation. Thus, each year, travel restrictions have decreased and travel-related services increased slowly but surely.
Luang Prabang, a pretty, temple-filled city, now has several world-class resorts and luxury properties, as well as a modern airport. The capital, Vientiane, has started to boom because of investment from China and Thailand and has started to build in anticipation of increased tourism.

EXCITING DESTINATIONS IN LAOS

LUANG PRABANG
For first-time travellers, Luang Prabang is a startling discovery: a jewel of a town at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. Acknowledging its importance to mankind, the town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Parts of the old town have since benefited from a considerable amount of restoration work. Amidst the history and preservation, travellers will find boutique hotels, breathtaking buildings, endless black-and-white mosaic sidewalks and plenty of modern shops.

KONG LO CAVE
Take a boat ride through the exhilarating, and spectacularly haunting 7.5km Kong Lo Cave - home to the stalactite woods. You'll find this cave in the Phu Hin Bun, a National Protected Area in the Bolikhamsai & Khammuan provinces. If possible try to keep your explorations to 2 days. Stay at the nearby a healthy variety of award-winning ecoresort in the area, or decide on a number of local home-stay opportunities. The Kong Lo Village also offers a variety of well-cooked Laotian cuisine.

VIENTIANE
Vientiane, Laos' capital, is one of the most low-key, friendly capital cities in the world. With its tree-lined avenues and manageable traffic, Vientiane still retains a quiet charm. Signs of the country's turbulent history abound in Vientiane: the colonial legacy of the French reduced to crumbling architectural gems, tree-lined avenues and crusty baguettes sold in the morning market. Although a conservative town, Vientiane offers plenty to see and do - from museums to street markets selling fine silks.

NAM HA NATIONAL PARK
Take an eco-responsible trek through some of the wildest, densest jungle in the country. The Nam Ha National protected area, in the Luang Nam Tha province in Northern Laos, is home to tigers and a rich variety of ethnic tribes. With a long history, this densely forested region is now a mecca for eco-tourism, with award-winning tours programs. From trekking, to mountain biking, to rafting, to bird watching, to ethnology - theres so much to see, do, and learn.

SI PHAN DON
This is where the Mekong river turns turquoise and the night air fills with fireflies. The Four Thousand Islands, otherwise known as Si Phan Don, is a magical place. Located in the very south of the country, straddling the border of Cambodia, Si Phan Don is where the Mekong river is at her best, meandering round thousands of sandbars, and islands. Here you will find the rare Irrawaddy dolphin, among two impressive waterfalls near the southern tip of the Don Khon.
