About SCOTLAND

When you think about Scotland, you think about the castles soaked in history, the grandure of the highland scenery, perhaps even the white, remote sandy beaches of the Shetland islands. Scotland year after year, proves to be a country brimming with activities and excitement all year long, showcasing everything that's truly great about their culture, community, and breathtaking landscape.

The year begins with the welcoming cheer of a traditional Hogmanay. Truly a place to be for the New Year, every year.  Scotland celebrates this festive season well through January in honour of music, dance, and the literature of 'Auld Lang Syne's' Robbie Burns.

Springtime wakes Scotland's landscapes from a cozy sleep, bursting with wildlife. Along the miles of sandy white coastline and rocky hills, it is possible to catch a glimpse of a puffin in the skies, or a bottlenose dolphin swimming close to shore.

The summer brings the playful side of Scottish life to those who wish to embrace it. Exciting outdoor events such as the Highland Games, pair well with the active spirit of the country which is host to some of the most beautiful hill walks, traditional outdoor games & activities, and of course the home of golf.

The beautiful autumn months provide the perfect backdrop to events such as music festivals, comedy festivals, whiskey tasting events, and who could forget, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Prepare to party as winter returns, with the famous festivities, including the Winter Festivals get underway again.

FOOD & DRINK

Grass fed beef and lamb from the lowlands, venison from the hills of the highlands, whitefish from the North Sea, game birds a plenty, and shellfish of all kinds from a pure and clean environment of the inshore waters of the western seaboard – these are just some of the choices made for a main course.

Add soft fruits from Angus, greens and herbs from productive fields and kitchen gardens, plus traditional ingredients such as oats creates an authentically Scottish modern cuisine.

Many are aware of some of Scotland’s most traditional dishes such as Haggis, but what about Cullen Skink? The traditional fish soup made from smoked haddock and potatoes. Other examples include Scotland’s cheeses, such as the rich and mouthwatering Lanark Blue and Ross-shire Caboc, and a range of bakery goods including the buttery relative of the French croissant.

Even Scottish fast food comes from the very best outlets from award winning establishments achieving fame beyond the communities they serve. Freshness guaranteed, you mustn’t leave the country until you’ve had a traditionally crispy & hot meal of fish and chips!

All this good food and the achievements that have come with it means thriving farmers markets for travellers to explore and embrace. From small beginnings, these gatherings, where local producers sell direct to consumers, have gained momentum right across the country. Many Scottish towns have monthly markets on Saturdays, while Edinburgh’s giant market operates weekly.

The good food in its abundant supply, matched with a thriving and passionate food community goes hand in hand with the incredible accommodations available to us as Canadians. In a country where looking after guests is part of a long tradition, Scotland has a superb choice of accommodation of all kinds. Long-established country houses and castle hotels head a list that also includes chic boutique-style hotels and restaurants with rooms, as well as guest houses, B&B’s where home baking may be another reminder of the traditions of hospitality.

Put together your clan's history by following a custom itinerary focused on your families history, and embark on the ultimate journey of discovery.
