With almost 2,500 islands, sea and sun are at their best in Greece: spotless sands and clear-blue water abound. ATHENS

Athens is a must-see on any European tour. Here, ancient and modern merge in ways that are fascinating and sometimes overwhelming. You can't help but walk around the Parthenon and the rest of the Acropolis and dream about the great ones who have come before you and whose footsteps you're in - yet Greece's capital has been reinventing itself; and the results could not be more charming.

MYKONOS

Set like gems in the sparkling blue Aegean Sea, each of the Cyclades islands has its own character. For Mykonos, the local culture is a mix of the sacred and the profane. This island is the gateway to the neighbouring unoccupied island of Delos, the sacred centre of the Cyclades. The short boat trip is a popular and worthy shore excursion giving firsthand insights into the sacred life of the ancient Greeks.

SOMME

Part walkable historic park part modern waterfront metropolis (the "Hub of New England") - this is a place with no lack of things to do day or night. The city is still a relatively easy place to visit, Boston's attractions and historical sites are laid out in simple-to-follow walking tours. Be sure to check out Fenway Park—one of the nation's most hallowed baseball stadiums—is a destination in itself. Also be sure to see nearby Salem.

REIMS

The principal city of the region where champagne is produced, though many would agree that the highlight of the city is its magnificent Gothic cathedral, the Cathedrale Notre Dame, begun in 1211 and completed almost a century later. Most of the kings of France were crowned there. Don't miss the stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall in the chapel and the statue of Joan of Arc in full armour.
